Teaching Students to Ask Productive Questions

Most students I meet know how to ask one type of question in math class. “How do I this?” But “How do I do this?” doesn’t help them connect the dots in their learning. Teaching them how to be curious about what values are worth, why steps and operations work, and when to use the skills they’re currently learning helps them recognize the picture that is hiding inside all those random dots.
